Deciding on Your Forever Home
The following is an excerpt from the upcoming book Chronological Order: The Fine Print for a Large Life, written by Jill Yesko and Laurean Kile. This excerpt is from a section of the book that discusses purchasing a "Forever Home" early in life.
When purchasing that next home, be sure to make sure it meets all of your needs now as well as when you are 90. Here are features to consider as you begin your search:
one-story living: Remember, we want to avoid falls! This includes entryways with no steps and a level driveway and walkway!
extra-wide doorways and hallways: A 36"-wide doorway makes the house easily accessible for a wheelchair if needed. Wide hallways and entryways make for easy navigation.
lower-level counters, cabinets, sinks, and sturdy drawers in the kitchen, stove with controls in the front so you are not struggling to reach over hot burners
lower windowsills
lever doorknobs and handles throughout—easier to use even if your hands are arthritic
front loading washer and dryers
raised electrical outlets, so you do not have to bend over
no-step-entry tiled shower stall with grab bars and handheld sprayer
low-maintenance landscaping or hardscaping features in the yard
